I´m gonna say, no book (or movie, or tv series) had EVER broke my heart as much as HBP. And is not because of the death(s). I truly resent JK because of that. I was happier and way less jaded before.

Actually I couldn't care less about the shipping. I just know that Sam wouldn't randomly fling out some of my favourite character's deaths on a throw-away line. And that I might actually understand characters' motives and Sirius wouldn't pointlessly die because Harry fucking forgot to check a fucking mirror. I could go on all day. I love her world, but I hate some of the things she did with it.

ok, then i apologize for my incorrect assumptions, and i can see where you're coming from (but i'm a little confused because you're talking about ootp and the anon above me specifically said hpb. lol whatevs).

i disagree about the "sirius wouldn't pointlessly die" thing. his death was to prove to harry not to rush into situations and rely too much on his instinctive, heroic nature, because it can and DID get him and others into trouble. also, sirius's death was a product of his own restlessness and mistreatment of kreacher, which harry finally accepted in deathly hallows, along with the lesson he learned in ootp about thinking stuff through before jumping into action. if he had gone ahead and made that snap decision to beat voldemort to the elder wand in dh, the rest of the book would have turned out very, very differently i think.

the above is, of course, all subjective and i'm sure that you've probably heard those arguments before. i was sad about sirius's death too, but i can see why jkr wrote his death the way she did. but i'm a little curious about the "throw-away line" bit. were you referring to lupin or sirius? because i was more pissed about lupin not getting a death scene during my first read of dh, but later i grew to accept it because it was a full-circle story for the marauders and harry couldn't be around for every single death at the hogwarts battle.

sorry for the tl;dr.

Sirius's death was one of the most thoughtful in the entire series. It was quick, yes, but he was mourned and it developed Harry's character.

Now Lupin is a different story...
