I don’t have a horse in this race but I always thought they were pretty equal in every way. I know JP turned out to be a trash human so I’d guess that’s coloring your perception, kinda the opposite of rose tinted glasses.

Wait, what did JP do?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Like ten years ago stories started coming out about him getting drunk and exploding on people. He got pulled over for DUI at least once but nothing came of it. Then more fighting until about five years ago he got into it with a patron at his bar and beat the guy with a chair. It’s always been the same story from him, too. “I have mental health, it’s not my fault but I’ll do better.” But then doesn’t.

It's just the tip of the iceberg of what he did. Two of the most infamous instances are about him being unnecessarily mean to two service employees he was displeased with. And wasn't the bar employee he attacked while drunk one of his employees? He was also pretty awful to a young (a fourteen-year-old, I think?) fan online. I think you can find a recap (with viable links; towards his tweets and other stuff) of all the most severe wrong-doings that soured his reputation for some SPN watchers (me included; I wasn't a fan, but I liked him well enough before) on Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-21 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
He also doxxed one of them online as "this server at this restaurant was so horrible to me" ... which, not great with a fandom like SPN really

I hate JP's face. Reminds me of a bulldog for some reason.

CW shows had good actors?

Jensen wasn't always amazing, but he was decent and had some episodes where he did a really great job.

Can't say I agree, I thought everyone on that show was equally as bad honestly, people just gave the dudes they found attractive a pass for it. But I'm also not trying to change your mind here, it's just my opinion after giving the show a try.

Ackles does his job. His job is to be a charismatic, funny action guy and he pulls it off. It's not Shakespeare or Stanislavski or anything but it doesn't need to be. If you succeed at the job you need to do, you are doing a good job as an actor.

Also, Jim Beaver is a genuinely good actor and I won't hear anyone say otherwise. Mark Sheppard is quite good for his part as well.

Yep, this is the point I was trying to make downthread.

There are some actors turning in decent performances in the show. Some of them are capable of quite a lot more in other contexts.

Jensen did a good job with the acting, especially when compared to Jared, *especially* when they were doing dramatic scenes together. Cripes Jared was hard to watch sometimes.

Jensen did a really nice job in the episode where he's in a dream or genie-fied or something and he's talking to his mother and she's not responding to him. His monologue in that scene is really well done.

There are actually quite a few actors on Supernatural who I thought both a) have proved their chops by doing compelling, nuanced acting work elsewhere and b) knew what the assignment was for this show and delivered fully.

lmao, mte

Well yeah. For example you can see it in Flanagan's shows. Whenever you like his shows or not, the team he pulled can act. And a lot of his actors are CW actors. So direction matters indeed.

I don't think he was terrible, but I do think he wasn't quite as good. And he didn't do very well when he had to play other characters. Like, possessed!Sam never worked for me.

He was the worst Lucifer.

Yup. He was also the worst Meg.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean that just makes him 50ft down while everyone else on that show was 20ft down. I enjoyed SPN but not because the acting was any good.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2024-04-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
How is that an unpopular opinion?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-21 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Padalecki was the worst actor on that show. He has no range and his chief talents are being tall and being that guy from Gilmore Girls who got hired because the execs thought teenage girls would dig him.

Jensen is no Daniel Day-Lewis but was much more talented.

When Jared does that thing with his lips, OP. Lordy.

i think jensen was significantly better at any and all of the more natural drama the show goes with. i think jared was better at playing other characters, which is funny lol. i also thought that jensen was wildly checked out in the later seasons, so his Michael was much worse to me than anything Jared did.
