In my youth, I used to feel very guilty for how much I liked a lot of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, including (or especially) the parts from the POV of the neo-Nazi characters and various abusive figures.

I still don’t play or sing certain songs in public, but I mostly got over the guilt.

I mean, it's about a character and a bad legacy that people are still carrying on today, not saying "Confederates were right". Elton John and Bernie Taupin certainly weren't talking about themselves.

I think it's a true mark of empathy to be able to empathize with someone who has some aspects of themselves that are awful; to recognize the awfulness in them, but to simultaneously recognize their humanity.

It's easy to empathize with people who are obviously good and right, or who are members of your own group.

my black ass ain't singing for karaoke, but i adore this song. it's such a good perspective song, especially with the history because it gives a sense of dread and futility and so much irony that wouldn't be the case if the soldier were northern.
