Not for the studio it wasn't. And that is what matters if you want a sequel.

That sounds like it's on the studio for making such a bad deal that they would barely get paid even if the series was a record-breaking success (which it was). And considering Mappa doesn't make anime for free, they probably got paid up front for creating the show so 'broke even' doesn't really apply. They would have gotten paid more than it cost to make the show (otherwise they wouldn't have made it at all) so it was always going to break even regardless, they were never taking a loss.

And that bad deal is why Mappa broke even and won't do a sequel.

NAYRT, but could they not just... negotiate a better deal for any continuation, if that was the only reason? I'd expect the show being a hit to give them more leverage than they had originally.
