Are the two really that comparable? My Immortal is legendary even outside of fandom. The other one is pretty obscure even in fandom.

Confession, I only learned about My Immortal recently and I've been in fandom in one place or another since the 90s. I have no idea how I missed it.

I learned about My Immortal pretty late too, which is weird ‘cause it seems like the sort of fic I would’ve read back when I was younger.

I'm not in the fandom in question, and I know about My Immortal. I have never heard of the other one.

Manacled is really not an obscure fic: if you sort by kudos, it's the third most popular fic on Ao3!

Look up Manacled on Tiktok, Instagram, Youtube or even Facebook and you will find content about it.

The author got a book deal to publish a scrubbed version of it.

I think you’re underestimating My Immortal’s infamy. And it isn’t how anyone got into fanfiction.

Maybe Manacled is a very popular fic and even some people’s first fic, but My Immortal wasn’t either of those things. Manacled sounds a lot closer to EL James’ Twilight fic in every way except the pairing. To include being better known outside of fandom than in it.

Look up anything on thise sites and you'll find content. I had never heard of Manackled until recently and I still don't really know anything other than its HP fic and caused drama.

But also I dont really think infamous or popular fic is how most people find fic and fandom?

I don't think of 'My Immortal' as being anyone's 'first fanfiction'-- for some people maybe it's the only fanfiction they know of because it gained some infamy, but is it really a thing people find and then say 'yeah I'm going to get into this!'?
