The rich are so disproportionately in control of just about everything these days that it's getting to a point where I wonder if punishing the rich is the only effective way to actually help the poor. I'm not saying that all mega-rich people are monsters or that they all deserve to be guillotined. But they (i.e. the systems and obstructions put in place to serve their interests) are by far the primary reason we aren't helping the poor (or putting sufficient money into literally anything that doesn't benefit primarily the rich); they are the main obstruction to that happening, and have been for a long time now, and the poor are only getting more oppressed and the rich are only getting richer. We just keep asking them to let us do things that don't benefit primarily them, and they just keep saying 'nah." Short of making our problems their problems, there doesn't seem to be a lot left to try.

(Not saying this is true for every country in the world, but it's true on a broad enough spectrum that I'm not going to limit it to being purely a comment about the US, either, even if the US is one of the worst offenders.)

I admit I don't know a lot of theory, but it seems like the first step to dealing with the rich would be ignoring them. Stuff like occupying unused houses and refusing to leave when the rich people say they own them. Violence is an inevitable result of that when the rich people hire people to throw you out, but it's not really the goal per se.

Ignore the people with the money and power to make everyone's lives miserable? Yeah, let me know how that turns out.

making them pay their fair share in taxes and forcing them to invest some of their wealth into the communities that support them would be a huge start. get rid of all the loopholes, don't let them hide money overseas, stop big businesses from exploiting resources and using slave/child labor overseas. force ceos to pay their workers a living wage. we could have these things if they weren't lining the pockets of so many politicians.

I wouldn't say any of that is punishing them; it's just making the rules apply to them equally.
