To me it's no different than any other mundane AU where the characters have been completely removed from their canon setting. "In canon, they were superheroes/wizards/pro athletes/demon hunters, but now they're baristas/college students/cubicle drones!"

I have read one and only one “mundane AU” that I enjoyed.

It mapped the characters of the MCU onto baseball teams and somehow it was great. The characters really fit their new roles. And there was some actual plot involved outside of just “slice of life”.

I agree, but also I don't understand why people would write this. Except one fic where it was a plot point.

Not everyone thinks that supernatural/superhuman/whatever characters are more interesting than mundane ones. It’s fun to take a non-mundane character and see how they’d live if they were mundane.

mundane =/= boring, it's just the matter of writing skills and grasp of characterization. supernatural or superhero elements are not inherently more interesting, it's just a setting like any other
