If you ask Dingo where the name Dingo comes from, he’ll say he’s like a wild dog, but his real name is Dean and his little sister had loved piggyback rides from Dean and at some point, “Dean, go!” turned into Dingo. He didn’t go by it outside his family until he changed high schools after the family moved house to another district. That was when Dean had decided that he was done being decidedly average and dyed his brown hair black, put on silver eyeliner, boots, ripped jeans, and band t-shirts and anything else he could think of that might fit into the ‘cool guy’ persona he was striving for. His mother had sighed at him, told him not to wear anything that would get her called to the school, and let him go. He’d introduced himself as Dingo from then on. He’d learned how to lean against things for effect, how to play bass guitar, and perfected a disinterested expression. He’d tried smoking and hated it and so ended up using toothpicks to make it seem like he had smoked and still had the oral habit.
Dingo knows not everybody buys into his facade, but enough do. Still, he thinks it’s hilarious when Poser comes up as a possible name for the band, even if he pretends that he’s annoyed by it. He makes it sound mocking, but he’s the one that suggests spelling it Poseur. Dingo silently cheers inside when the others pick it.

Blue’s name is actually Blue. His eyes had been blue when he was born, which is why his dad picked the name, but they had changed after a while into hazel, more green than brown. He’s okay with his name, but he’s glad he was named before his eyes changed because he would not have been okay with Hazel. Blue’s favorite color is blue (he’s not sure how much of that is due to his name), but he tells people who ask that his favorite color is gray. Blue only plays the drum because he’d somehow ended up in band class as a freshman and picked out a snare drum to learn for the school marching band. He meets Dingo at some house party. Dingo’s a year older than him and goes to a different school. He doesn’t know why he listens when Dingo says something about starting a band since Blue gets the impression that most of what Dingo says is for effect, but he does.

Cal’s been getting comments on his looks since he was a baby. Perfect strangers have stopped his parents to say something about his ‘beautiful’ bright blue eyes and his ‘adorable’ blond curls. It slacks off some when he hits six or seven, but gets worse again when he starts singing with the church choir. He almost quits after they make him an angel for the Christmas pageant for the fourth year in a row, but he really does like to sing. He does quit after his parents get a divorce and some people at the church get superior about it. When Dingo asks about Cal being in the band, Cal’s sure at least part of it has to do with his looks. But that’s okay, part of the reason he decides to join is to hopefully appall those snooty churchgoers.

Anton starts learning to play the piano at age four. He doesn’t love it, but he likes it well enough, and it makes his mom happy. He keeps up the lessons and becomes good enough at it that any time there’s a recital or something that needs accompaniment, he’s asked. He doesn’t always say yes, but often enough he does. He says yes more once he hits his growth spurts. He feels tall and gangly and clumsy most of the time, but when he plays, it’s comforting, familiar. So, he really thinks about it when Dingo comes to him about the band, even though he doesn’t think he really fits in with the other guys. He feels like he’s a flailing pale mess against Dingo’s dark-eyed confidence. He’s almost half a foot taller than Blue but feels small in the face of Blue’s self-assurance. He feels so plain with his washed-out brown hair and gray eyes when compared to Cal’s brightness. But Dingo wants him in his band, Blue smirks at him like they already have an inside joke together, and Cal gives him a gentle, kind, welcoming smile. And so, he says yes again.
