I tried looking for some Reylo fic, a few months after TLJ came out. I'm sure there was some good stuff in there somewhere, but most of it just wasn't what I was looking for. It felt like it was all either, "Kylo Ren is a misunderstood sad boy who has been done wrong, and Rey is the bland (but special!) self-insert who understands him" or "Kylo Ren is a dark fuck prince and Rey is the bland (but special!) self-insert who is helpless to resist his magnetism." Sometimes it was a twofer and Kylo Ren was both a misunderstood sad boy and a dark fuck prince at once.

I'm not sure exactly what I was looking for from Reylo fanfic, but I know for sure I wanted something that didn't play to such bog-standard M/F romance tropes.

I'd want fic for a ship like that to be Battle Couple stuff, featuring lots of ethically dubious moments in which Ren is struggling to change and Rey is struggling to resist her own darker impulses. You're telling me there's none of that out there?

I'm friends with some relatively popular Reylo writers, and while I did see what you were talking about, the post-TROS fics were really good and managed to give me canon Rey and canon Ben. Not so much the SPESHUL PRINCE/PRINCESS. Granted, I was trying after TROS and not TLJ, so YMMV, but I found a lot of really good fic.
