I don't really get it either. But then, I grew up on the Bible so cousinfucking seems pretty tame by comparison.

DA

It was the Bible and Greek and Egyptian mythology for me, so yeah. Cousins getting together is pretty tame compared to that.

It was 19th century Canadian and American literature for me, so cousinfucking was pretty much the norm.

Meanwhile, the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom is disappointed its reveals didn’t make their ship incestuous enough.

I don’t really remember. Something about an uncle and a nephew, I think, and people wishing it was father and son instead.

Coming from a family where a decent amount of people expected my cousin and I to wind up together, I agree with you.

I've been around the block enough that I've learned there's two distinct camps, when it comes to "what is acceptable in Japanese culture" - one camp is careful to a fault to let Japan do what Japan do, the other camp is absolutely horrified at what does and doesn't fly in Japan. There is NO middle ground between them. At all. I wish there was, because I definitely know that sometimes you do just let Japan do what Japan do and other times when you have to stand up and say um...no, that's not cool.

Cousincest is not one of them, Japanese media is really good at making cousin-chemistry work. M/M cousins especially, which is where cousincest is probably less icky overall. But then, I ship m/m cousins from several Japanese video games so full disclosure.

Totally didn't learn THAT in Social Studies.

Did learn about the British Royal family's interrelatedness and it was presented as a cautionary thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I definitely didn't learn anything about other modern-day culture's stance on cousincest in school. I'm not in any anime or j-drama fandoms so I have no personal stake in this. I'm just saying, that's definitely not something we covered at all.

One of my teachers in middle school was married to his first cousin. They didn't know at the time and found out years later when the family decided to have a big reunion.

And, yeah, we learned about the european royals and ancient egypt. Lots of incest in history (and around us). I don't get the pearl clutching about it ESPECIALLY in my fandom where it would be between two men who didn't grow up together and can't have kids. What's the problem???

I just got into Telugu movies last year (thank you RRR) and at first I was shocked at the... incredible amount of cousins getting married in those movies (especially when it seems that the girl ONLY gets interested in the hero when she finds out they're related) but... I shrugged and thought 'cultural differences'. Plus, all my ships are non canon and of non related characters so... it works.

There's a YouTuber I follow who does a lot of Japanese stuff, including letsplays of horror games. I had to stop watching a recent one, because she kept freaking out because one of the main characters clearly had a crush on the other, who was her distant relative (5th or 6th cousin), even when it wasn't relevant to the scene.

Unless you're writing mpreg, m/m cousincest, especially the type where the characters don't even know they're cousins, is such an incredible non-issue. I get being uncomfortable if it's two very close cousins who grew up together because hey, that makes some people uncomfortable. But if they dont even know? Completely irrelevant.
(Applies to most m/f cousincest as well, really, because it's not actually such a big deal genetically if the family doesnt have a long, long history of incest already. But with any pregnancy risk removed? Non-issue.)

Same. I'm from the UK where historically we don't have a taboo about it, though that's changed a lot. And for me I'm like - my cousins I've been close to my whole childhood, eugh, that grosses me out because they do feel like close family. But I've noticed one of my Aussie cousins is attractive. Would never do anything about it, and it's not even a crush, but I def noticed him in a way I can't imagine noticing the cousins I grew up with.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-04 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
Have argued with people online about this re historical novels from UK and Europe, and the fact that cousins can marry in UK, and in many US states - Theodore Roosevelt married a cousin. But they just scream icky incest.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-05 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I truly don't understand why some people get so up in arms about it. Maybe it's a cultural thing? But I barely even know my cousins, so if I were to meet one of them these days, it would effectively be like meeting a stranger. It wouldn't be weird at all because I didn't grow up with them and barely know them.

As someone who's been drifting in and out of the DCMK fandom for twenty years, but not that invested in shipping myself, I always kinda assumed/got the impression that the pseudo-twincest vibe was supposed to be a Feature Not A Bug for kaishin shippers?
