The way to explain the game is that all of the lore exists to allow armies of your dudes to fight armies of your friend's dudes. Diplomacy? Logistics? Casualties? Acceptable losses? Morale? Friendly fire? Fuck that, you can roll dice.

If I want my dudes to be emotionless lemmings bayonet charging your dudes, they are. If I want their mothers back home on the hive world saving up for candles to light in their memories, they are. If i want them to be traumattized and brainwashed from the schola, they are. They're my dudes and the universe is big enough for them.

And sometimes I want them to be sincerely, bravely, saving farmers from orks and so they are!

But also I like your explanation because yes they would.
