I think you’re right. I’ve watched so many good fantasy authors over the last 10-12 years try to “improve” in the hopes of getting the next big tv show. They all end up writing the same boring political intrigue trilogies as each other and the only variations are if it’s a complete ASOIAF/GOT ripoff or if they only half rip GRRM and the other half Tolkien.

A large percentage of them have switched to kickstarter campaigns for publishing because they get more money. The few I tried to stick with were all shocked that they had to do a lot more work (and some really failed in that aspect). I’ve been spite watching the campaigns of one and he went from over 3k backers for book one of six to 551 for book four (he picked some up since the day before it closed when he only had 320ish). I had planned to continue supporting through the rest of the series but he burned his backers on book three and I’m petty.
