I'm neurodivergent and I wholly embrace the "canon is just raw materials you can use or not, depending on your preference" mentality when it comes to my fannish engagement. Though it did take me a little longer than some people to stop holding rigidly to canon and realize that fandom is about fandom first and foremost. It exists for its own sake.

It's fine if that isn't how fandom works for you, and if you feel that your relationship with canon-adherence is shaped by your neurodivergence then I see no reason to doubt that for you, it's true. But IDK how legit it is to frame a preoccupation with canon and canon adherence as a neurodivergent thing more broadly.
