I'll take undertagging over overtagging any day of the week though.

Why? If there are no tags you cant search for it.

Too many tags degrade the search function for all other fics. Absent tags, or even just undertagging, affects only that specific book.

Word chosen just to annoy the anti goodreads anon

I haven't seen that anon! Is it just that goodreads is owned by amazon or is there a new reason to hate?

DA

People are putting fanfiction reviews on goodreads. It's hella rude and stupid. I dunno if there's another anon who hates Goodreads. I think Goodreads is fine, I like looking at lists. Fanfiction does not belong there.

There was a big wank about whether (a) fanfiction belongs on Goodreads and (b) whether or not it is accurate to describe works of fanfiction as "books" a few weeks back

I kind of feel like both are equally problematic in terms of finding fics. On the one hand, if things aren't tagged, a tag search won't find it. On the other hand, if they tag every single character who shows up in the fic, you are going to be so overloaded with fics that it is hard to find what you are really looking for.

There is a happy middle in there.

I'd rather miss one fic than have to wade through twenty pages of unrelated dreck.

Same! In older fandoms, it’s easy to find stuff that’s under tagged even when the fandom is giant or even still active. Just use the fandom tag and sort by date, then skip to the last page and start moving forward.

IME the undertagging is a mix of Open Doors and early adopters not knowing how or not caring to tag. That first year or so it was purely an archive where authors posted a backup of their fic but the main was on LJ, either on their own or posted directly into a comm. I can’t remember anyone posting there expecting to find a new audience, that came later.
