Gene had a vision, but also some significant blindspots too. Coto just was in the job long enough for his own to show through.

I genuinely believe Michael Piller made incredible contributions to the franchise and really deserves a ton of credit for the franchise being what it is.

I also think Ira Steven Behr and Gene Coon had positive impacts, and DC Fontana as well (although there's an argument whether she should be considered a show runner or not). And obviously the show wouldn't exist without Gene. But Michael Piller really was so important and influential on the franchise.
