Comment OP here and you can still scroll accounts that have a custom theme and show up as username.tumblr.com, just not accounts with the default theme and tumblr.com/username addresses.

Also I use findtags.tumblr.com to check tags for my current fandom and otp.

I used to use 12ft.io to check tumblr accounts with the new default theme. I don't bother so much these days because most of the people whose blogs I check regularly have custom themes and last I heard 12ft had stopped working. Archive.is might work, or an RSS feed.

I'm with you on not wanting to make an account, especially with the transphobic owner, the AI scraping, and new accounts being stuck in algorithmic "best stuff first" mode with no way for new users to shut it off.
