Re: Age Gap Question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
In real life age gaps are a shortcut we use to assess power imbalances. A 40 year old has more life experience than an 18 year old and can use that to manipulate the 18 year old into decisions that are not in the younger person's best interest. That's why age gaps get less and less relevant as the younger person gets older. A 20 yr old with a 30 yr old? Sus. A 40 yr old with a 50 yr old? Why bother bringing it up.

In fiction I love age gaps for the inherent power imbalance.

I agree with the person who said that conservatives make age gaps less of an issue, but usually only in one direction. As long as the woman is younger than the man, that's as it should be (they love marrying an underaged girl to an adult man).
