I'm not sure whether this is a vent or what, but...the rent that's being asked for in my area, man. It's completely detached from reality.

I live in the poorest, most rural county in my state. I just saw an ad for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house, nothing included, for $2900 a month -- in a town that doesn't even have a fucking gas station in it. Who the fuck do they think is gonna rent that shit?

To put it in perspective, my mortgage is $1400 a month, for a 3 bedroom with 1.5 baths. Whoever that landlord is, they're a greedy asshat -- and that's so, so fucking common right now.

WTF, that's ridiculous. I live in a very HCOL area and I can rent a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house in my neighborhood for around $4000/month, and that's within walking distance of both bus and train lines as well as a multitude of shops, banks, restaurants, a post office, etc. If you split that with roommates that's a very reasonable amount to be paying with our area's minimum wage (which is much, much higher than the federal minimum) and average salaries.

There are way too many assholes whose greed I hope backfires on them in the nastiest way. (I'm not banking on it... but I also won't say it's impossible either.)

Renting is such a scam. In my neighborhood I pay $2000/mo, nothing included, for a 2 bed, 1 bath house. My friend was able to buy in the neighborhood and their mortgage is around $1200 for a 4 bed 2 bath house twice the size of my rental. It is infuriating.

I'm feeling this so much rn because my mom and her SO just got the news three days ago that they're being renovicted from the place they've lived for 28 years. Their rent in this place is ridiculously good, and now they're looking at places half the size with no yard that cost twice as much. I'm worried for them.

Meanwhile I literally just helped my friend move after he was evicted "so a family member could move in." They're probably going to hike the rent by a grand now that he's out, and he has no idea how he's going to afford to rent anywhere else. I'm worried for him.

Meanwhile my father and I share a spacious 1 bedroom that we've turned into a 2 bedroom with a bit of clever furniture and curtain placement. Both our names are on the lease, so we're protected in that regard, but it's clear the building owners are now looking for ways to squeeze more money out of this shitty-ass slum complex they've allowed to degenerate for fifty years. If they manage to pry us out, our rent will double. We'll be able to afford it, but not comfortably (and only because neither of us drives). I'm worried for us.
