I think part of this is simply the result of strict age segregation in schools. Homeschooled kids tend to be much more comfortable interacting with people they share interests with, without acting like age should automatically put them above younger kids or below older kids, or keep them away from knowledgeable adults. And IME, that translates into a more accepting attitude towards adults hanging around with (and marrying) whoever they genuinely like.

Wow, I have seen the exact opposite. Maybe it’s because homeschooling in most of this region is for religious reasons, but the homeschooled kids around here draw much stricter lines around “people my age,” “adults/authority figures” and “younger kids who need to be monitored/taught/protected from society.” Meanwhile, the kids in public school all have afterschool jobs and activities that have led to them having to deal with people in the general public who are older and younger than them in much less regimented settings.
