We've spent the last twenty years fellating the military dick, for no fucking reason and another lost war in Asia it is gonna be hard to get back to normal about the military after that.

Erase “fan” and you have my sentiments. John Ringo can sit on a cactus.

Yes he can. I attended a panel at DragonCon that he was part of once. He showed up drunk and was a total dick.

Mostly agreed in general, even not just fanfiction. I do love Stargate: SG1, though.

SG1, despite the Pentagon sitting in on script meetings, often managed to be quietly subversive regarding the military. SGA and SGU were military shitheels, despite being on paper the least likely to follow the military line.

I know, it makes no sense.

Pull the other one

Hammond: Colonel, the United States is not in the business of interfering in other people’s affairs.
O’Neill: Since when, sir?

And the episode where they maybe assassinated a reporter/whistleblower, I mean they claimed it was a car accident. But the main characters were pretty unconvinced of that explanation and it honestly could have gone either way.

+1

mmm yes so good. Jack was constantly throwing shade on his superiors and the govt as a bitter, jaded career officer should. Sam was more diplomatic about it but she sure didn't toe any party lines. add in a civilian scientist and an alien and there's no way this ensemble would have sucked military cock. Hell, even the general was straight up defiant of the president multiple times, you love to see it.

Take a drink every time Hammond said he didn't like his orders, but he was going to obey them; and then turned right around and encouraged the team to subvert the hell out of them while he looked the other way. Landry was a little more willing to go with the military flow though.

SGA was a weird one. I feel like they would flip it back and forth depending on who was writing or what they were in the mood for that episode.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
One fansite I was on for SGA had a "warcrime of the week" category on their episode recaps. Obviously that wasn't literal, they also included all the various different crimes against humanity committed as well. Carson, you little outerspace Mengele.

Haha. That show was so light hearted and fun until you took a second to think about it and then it was all waittaminute, what did they just do?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-19 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. It's annoying when the people writing it are insane conservatives. But it's not that bad on its own. It's a minor and empty but consistent and predictable pleasure. It's the equivalent of getting a taquito at 7-11. Terrible but sometimes it just hits the spot.

Yuuuup.

I'm kind of torn. I am pretty anti military irl but I do like a good military set up in fic and shows. It has the whole ra ra band together makeshift family dynamic built into it, and in fantasyland you can make it so the military actually gives a shit about the people and is there to help and isnt totally corrupt. Its a fun general idea. And most of the military fic I read is really team and mission focused, which I also like.

All that blathering aside, I do understand there is also ultra conservative military wet dream stuff which might be more what you're talking about and then I'd agree that is dnw. And if its too focused on praising and glorifying the military then I dnw that either.

Its complicated.

I differentiate between mythologizing real world military (particularly the US military) and having fictional militaries in a scifi/fantasy setting because it would be realistic to do so.

Like, for example, Babylon 5 doesn't romanticize the military. And in fact, the main characters end up starting a civil war.

Star Wars OT, both sides have a military set up, even if one is the actual current military of the universe and the other is the rebellion.

If you have war, you are going to have some kind of military. What I don't like is the romanticization of real world military that is seriously problematic (same way I feel about the romanticization about real world police), even in fictionalized form.

I'm ex-military, and nobody is more cynical and jaded than we are!

(Except for the dickwads who get their masculinity reinforced by it and conservatives, but fuck them lol.)

I'm not a fan of gung-ho military plots, but brothers/sisters in arms and found family are good.

I'm in Warhammer fandom so I guess I disagree, but real life wars is something I'm extremely not interested in reading about.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, if only there weren't militaries, then humans would stop getting into conflicts with one another.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a really random off topic comment.

Edgy.

what most military-related fanfiction doesn't do is what the military largely is for 90% of it: fucking boring. Wake up. Go to PT/run PT. Do your job. Usually be done by noon. Fuck around and get drunk if you're enlisted because there's nothing else to do. Fall asleep at 12am after playing video games badly while drunk for hours. Wake up at 5am and do it all over again.

5% is adrenaline-powered fight for your life. 5% of it is being pissed off at yourself for making the decision to sign up and then taking that out on everyone else around you
