Turned into implies that it's a forced change. There's some fics where charcters learn to live with it, as another commenter said, but they always get turned back in the end.
Some fics treat it as means to get around character's internilised homophobia.
I cant recall any fics with characters being happy about their gender change, and I've been in a fandom for a long time.
