Honestly, in my experience, people make the homebuying process into a nightmare by not paying attention to deadlines or to what the bank is asking for. The bank gives you a list on day one of the documents you need and when you need to have them by, and so many people either procrastinate, or decide they should be able to produce an entirely different set of documents instead, and then get anxious and mad when it turns out that no, they can't.

If you follow the instructions, then the process chugs along pretty smoothly.

This, honestly. We got all our ducks in a row and everything went smoothly. The worst part was it took something like 20 minutes to sign all the paperwork.

I don't know, I've known several intelligent people who have been through it and agree that it is a very stressful, difficult situation.
