Yes, she would be at fault for adding an Asian character to fill out the diversity chart.

Do you mean in terms of "tokenism," or what? I don't understand what you mean.

And there are other POC in the Harry Potter universe, it's not just Cho.

Well tokenism and the idea that if you don't have X in your story then you're Y (Asian/Black/other race and racist, gays and homophobic, etc). Sure Cho is a character all her own but the idea that she's mostly a love interest just reinforces what the media already does to Asian women: sexualize them and not give them a real chance to be unique, special, etc.

Though I'm a girl that would rather see a well developed character than a character thrown in there to appease the masses and see nothing but stereotype written all over them. (I haven't read enough of the HP series to know if Cho is or not, but I'm assuming she fits quite a few of them.)

Actually, I thought she was kind of a boring character. :/ I didn't think she was sexualized all that much, though, just that she was portrayed as being really pretty and cute and Harry had a crush on her. Which does kind of fit the stereotype, but, you know, if she was white and was portrayed the same way, nobody would think that was as big of a deal.

That's one thing I think is problematic about race in the media -- writers/creators have to be careful not to stereotype POC, which is important, but at the same time, white people get a free pass in that regard, since it's pretty much impossible to stereotype them based on race (sex and gender maybe, but not race).

As I was writing my reply to you I was thinking about that as well. If Cho was white, what difference would it make? She'd be just another girl, right?

I think the reason why white people get a free pass is because we don't have a lot of media portraying other POC as anything more than their stereotype. I've seen some movies, literature, etc that does acknowledge POC as more than just [insert stereotype], but most people haven't seen it or heard about it. If POC were treated the same way as whites, I think it'd change how things work for sure.

I actually thought she was a really interesting character (sticking by Marietta, a fifteen-year-old girl who is scarred for life, after the Umbridge event, = big liking for Cho here) but she was totally stereotyped by being an Asian in Ravenclaw even though she does not exhibit any of the Ravenclaw qualities throughout what is a lot of screentime in 5.

I totally see your point about how writers are more careful 'not' stereotyping POC and yet somehow do it anyway.
