Personally, I don't consider Ianto's death to be meaningless. But Tosh's was much more awesome.
But Owen's was much more meaingless - killed by a random power spike?

Yeah, but people said Owen looked like a monkey-fish, and there was the whole rape thing, and the icky zombification. I like the actor and got the character arc, but he didn't have much of a constituency.

Ah, but his death added even less to the plot than Ianto's. And the lack of meaning is the main complaint I've heard about Ianto dying.

I agree that Owen's death was meaningless and just there for shock, but to be fair he couldn't heal- it was only a matter of time untill he died. And I also think he got a nice send-off, the writing of his and Tosh's death was beautiful.

Tosh was my favourite on Torchwood, I loved her so much and still miss her hugely. But I thought, though premature (she should have at least got series 3!), her death was great because it was so very Tosh, trying to fix things for someone else before allowing herself to die.

I was more making the point that people getting up in arms over Ianto dying had nothing to do with his death being 'meaningless' and adding nothing to the plot, and more to do with him being a popular character.

I agree about Tosh. Though I was actually more of a fan of Ianto.

I understand the point you were making now, and I do agree that some of the fuss is due to his popularity. However, I can see why people are so torn up over the 'meaningless' nature of his death, as at least Owen, for example, died having accomplished something.

That is a good point.
To be honest, Ianto's death didn't bother me that much, meaningless or not. And I really liked him.
