It was truly a bizarre choice in a cascade of bizarre choices, but it especially bugs me as well given that they both had other female friendships in their stories. Why, of all the female characters in that series, did they have to make the ones who expressly get along fine with other women snipe at each other like that?

It sounds like a difference of opinion on whether or not they would obviously get along. Just because you think they would doesn't make it an obvious truth. Since you agree it's not an issue of the writers looking down on the very idea of female friendship, the logical alternative is that they just believed differently than you do about whether these particular two women would be friends or not.
