Only corporatists say the algorithm is politically neutral. It's been heavily favoring nazis and right wing shit heads since its inception.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that Google is putting its thumb on the scale to make the algorithm show more right-wing content.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Google refuses to publish any data about their algorithm, but given that they own Youtube with a very well known right wing bias, it is more likely than not.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
No it is not. That's not how it works.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
You absolutely have no idea what you're talking about because, like I said, google refuses to say anything about their algorithm. Trying to claim that you do is just straight up lying.

You can die on this hill if you want.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that YouTube's algorithm has an observable right-wing bias does not mean that it is more likely than not that Google is intentionally putting their finger on the scale and making the YouTube algorithm be right wing.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to have details on YouTube's specific algorithm to have knowledge about how these sorts of algorithms work in general.

You want this to be true because it satisfies your need for a boogeyman, not because it actually makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
not really. Google is not a goverment or a political organisation, it doesn't owe anyone an explanation. just like twitter.
so they probably don't ban the far right shit because it gives them a lot of engagement. just like twitter.
I know this is not true untill proven otherwise, but google has a much, much wider audience, and a much, MUCH bigger corporation than twitter. so they just don't tell us the numbers.
anyway, there's a reason for them not releasing the numbers. the funny thing about that is that your defence of them is a speculation/theory just like all the stuff in my comment. prove or it didn't happen. on that base, the secret maker has a better point than u and the girl above u.

DA

I suspect that ragebaiting plays a sizable role in that. It's why I've started keeping an eye on the (usually) third video in the recommended column. Those recommendations tend to be smaller right wing channels that are picking up speed due to putting forth ragebaiting content. I've told YouTube to not show these things enough times that I'm seeing a decrease in these types of recommendations.

YouTube wants you to watch videos, but why you watch is relevant to advertisers, not to YouTube itself. If someone says stupid shit that causes a controversy, YouTube can profit off the views so long as advertisers don’t get spooked.

Happened a few times to me too. The moment I notice any "pepe" and alike meme pages popping up is when I know I have to bump things back into place somehow.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I wanna know what I'm doing differently, because somehow I mostly get, "you might be autistic if..." videos recommended to me. I have no idea what I clicked on or watched to cause this.

I get a LOT of ads in Spanish or for cars or baby stuff. I don't speak Spanish, can't afford a car and neither have nor want a baby.

I agree that the "six degrees of Hitler" game is extremely easy to win on Youtube. It panders extremely quickly, the far-right and conspiracy wingnuts have absolutely gamed the system.

However I also encourage you (if you aren't already) to subscribe to channels that fit your style more and maybe rely more on the subscription feed than the algorithm feed. I'm subbed to a channel literally called Warographics (and most of Simon's other channels) and have watched so much history and war videos, but because I'm also subbed to like. Happy Kitty ASMR (if that's a thing??? I have several ASMR channels, basically) and let's play channels that my algorithmic feed is still pretty neutral. You have to play into the subs and system to balance things out.

But if I wasn't logged in, on a clean slate Youtube feed and watched some of my normal stuff? I'd be thrown down the pipeline to neo-Nazism for sure, because that's what it thinks I want, when really I'm just trying to watch a breakdown of the Battle of the Bulge :/

strictly speaking it's probably more that the other people who watch warhammer 40k and wwii vids are into neonazi terf stuff AND stay on youtube much longer, so the algorithm is like "well these are your people right? because you'll keep watching if they are!". algorithms are neutral, but the people they're getting data from are not and the priorities they have favor outcomes that are correlated to certain political behavior.

eta: remove the vids from your history and it's more likely to go back to normal.

Yeah, it's horrifying. We can all share tips and tricks to avoid it for ourselves (Newpipe!) but the danger is for 13 year old boys and 65 year old grandmas, you know?

It's horrifying. Call your governmental representatives. We need fucking legislation about this shit.

My 67 old father who still uses his old Nokia brick phone has found the Youtube button on the remote control and now keeps watching a mix of cat videos (which I obviously don't mind) and conspiracy videos several hours every day and I have no idea how to explain to him that they're lying to him in a way that gets through to him.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Try to manipulate his algorithm into showing him debunking videos for conspiracy theories if he'd rather believe the videos over you.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-29 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't sweat it, anon. If you thought your way through the political views you already have, YouTube being like "but have you considered neo-Nazism?" isn't going to have any effect. Aside from disgusting you, which it understandably managed.

Weirdly enough I don't get a lot of this on regular tube but I dropped shorts really fast. Because pipeline to right-wingers, misogynists and terfs was really.. ah short. Also I hated addictive nature of it.
(I am still angry at regular algorithm for trying to show me a lot of true crime because I like travel vlogs...)

I once searched for dragon makeup tutorials for a costume. If anything, I would've expected to get useless makeup tutorials (I never wear makeup outside of costumes), but instead next thing I knew, youtube was recommending a Ted Bundy makeup tutorial?? and more true crime stuff?? I changed the settings to turn off watch history after that ñlaksdjfs.

Use the "Don't Recommend Channel to Me" and "Not Interested" buttons indiscriminately. You can use them when you click the three dots on the corner of a video thumbnail.

I would watch warhammer 40k lore videos, and at first, it really happened what you mentioned, and it was hideous. After a while, I got to curate my content into something tolerable. You might still have to watch for dogwhistles -- a good one is whenever they use the word 'woke'.
