I was a bit like that (I guess whatever version of it there was back then) when I was a closeted teen and didn't have LGBT friends offline. I experimented often with gender online and loved trans headcanons for my fandoms. This has faded a lot as I got older, I imagine a lot of young people who enjoy it have similar reasons though. Regardless, I feel you on not understanding or relating to that subset of fandom. I just scroll past the way I scroll past NOTPs and fanart styles I dislike.
