they do not want to fund, support, or even passively endorse someone with views that include hurting or oppressing others

if people were honest about this then they wouldn't watch any Hollywood production. They would not be in fandom at all. There is absolutely no way to participate and guarantee that nobody involved aligns with your morals. This is just new fandom virtue signaling.

DA

Basically this. "I only consume fair trade chocolate" is one thing. "I only pay for actors when I approve of their politics" reeks of the belief that fans think they're buying something those artists never agreed to sell.

There is a reasonable middle ground and it's fine to have personal lines you won't cross while still acknowledging that you're a human with a need for entertainment and that means occasionally (and sometimes unknowingly) giving some degree of support to people who will turn out to have beliefs/actions you abhor. There is no hypocrisy in any of this. "You can't be perfect, so you shouldn't try at all and if you do it's just virtue signaling because you still support bad people sometimes, you hypocrite" is the far lazier stance to take.

If these people were talking in any sort of sane middle ground way I wouldnt have a problem. But they make blanket statements and try to condemn anyone who doesn't agree with them. The loud agressive extreme way they do it yet blatantly ignore other problematic productions or people is why it is virtue signaling.
