Re: A fandom that surprised you

Given how much Starker fic there is, I was initially surprised by how little of it had a dynamic I was remotely interested in. The fact that a lot of the people who are into it are into it expressly for underage, grooming, manipulation, incest vibes, dark!Tony, etc. makes sense to me now, but I didn't know to anticipate it at the time.

I also didn't know to anticipate how many fics would be blatantly self-inserting onto Peter for the fantasy of getting fucked good and nasty by Dom-Daddy!Tony Stark.

I didn't anticipate the sheer volume of feminized!Peter, or trans!Peter, or littles!Peter, or baby-boy!Peter, or SIM!Tony, or Mafia/Mob-Boss!Tony, or Incest AUs.

I didn't anticipate how few fics would actually grapple with the complicated reality of the public's response to their relationship.

It sounds like I'm shading the Starker fandom, but I'm not. Everybody's just writing what they're into. It kind of sucks when you're not into a lot of the popular tropes for a particular ship, but I think it happens to most of us at one point or another. C'est la vie.
