sabotabby: cat flag from ofmd with the caption be gay do crime (our flag means death)

Same. Honesty they both died young, why do I need to see that on my telly?

Love the thematically appropriate icon!

Well, that's not how it would have ended. We don't know how season 3 would end, but it wouldn't be with their deaths. David Jenkins: "It ended badly in real life, but we're not doing real life because we've got a Polynesian-Jewish man from New Zealand playing Blackbeard. Once you're doing that, you're not doing real life."

Fair enough. I still thought the ending was solid, though.

Can someone who knows fill me in? I don't watch OFMD.

Basically the two main characters Stede Bonnet and Edward AKA Blackbeard happily got together after a rough fallout, but they don't rejoin the rest of the pirate crew (who all are doing fine by the end of the show) and opt instead to live together in solitude.

While I would have loved a season three, I agree the show ended fine. It was bittersweet, but they're all in a better place than when they started.

Oh. That ... sounds really fine. Fandom osmosis has communicated enough that I maybe feel bad for the first mate. Izzy? But aside from that, it sounds like a good end for the show. And lots of room for future fanfic, because the mains didn't die. Thanks, anon!

It's giving Black Sails...I love it.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry for bluntness. But it is nowhere near the level of Black Sails in terms of skillful writing or storytelling payoff. :-/

I felt the inverse; I liked s2 for the most part but I still felt super unsatisfied with the ending. It felt like the initial draft outline ended in tragedy (or at least a cliffhanger like s1), and then they added the happy stuff because the prospects for s3 seemed grim.

I would have loved where the characters ended up if it didn't feel like the writers room's creative ambition got hampered by Warner Bros leadership sucking

+1

I found it really unpersuasive as a happy ending. The S1 ending actually felt more optimistic to me, because Stede and Ed seemed to really suit each other and I could imagine a happy resolution to their conflict.

But so little actual resolution occurs in S2 that their supposed HEA feels more like a ticking time bomb to me. Ed still has very little idea of who he wants to be beyond "Stede's boyfriend", and that's a super unhealthy situation for both him and their relationship.

Absolutely agree with the end of S1 versus S2. The S2 finale felt like a cheap shoehorned ending that happened because the writers wanted/needed it to, not a satisfying and logical conclusion.

S2 disappointed me in a lot of ways, including (especially) the final episode. So I really disagree with OP's statement that it was a satisfying ending, and I don't want a S3 because I no longer trust the writers.

BUT! I can see why this is a secret. Most of the fandom that enjoyed S2 has been gunning hard for S3. And most of the fandom that doesn't want S3 generally didn't enjoy S2.
