What do you think of people...

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
...who purposely mispronounce things because they find it personally amusing, up to and including words that have particular meaning to others?

Time and place. Sometimes it can be funny, sometimes not so much.

Much less annoying to me than when whole groups of people just seem to decide together to mispronounce something and then pretend they are the only ones doing it right.

Considering my husband and I have our own lingo that involves a lot of this, I'm probably more empathetic when others do it.

The one exception to that is if the mispronunciation is a slur/cones close to it. I almost threw hands with a classmate over his mispronunciation Chang Kai-Shek because of its overt racism. As it was, I did snap him at him for what he did. It wasn't the first time I stood for something in that particular class during high school.

Well, I find people who mispronounce loan words to sound the way their source word was pronounced in its language unbearably pretentious. Unless you're speaking French, don't you dare call that pastry a "kwa-sahn."

DA

With this, it kinda depends for me if the person in question is an ass in general. If they go around judging people for not doing what they do, it's definitely pretentious. If they just, like ... learn languages in their spare time and are basically playing spot-all-the-English-words-that-are-actually-French as they talk, that bothers me less than the people who are running around imitating whatever random language distortion they heard some radio or TV announcer do.

What really bothers me is when schools teach words with the wrong pronunciation or definition because the teachers were ignorant. Sometimes you can clock whoever was in Ms. So-and-so's class decades after the fact, just because they apparently never corrected the Vocabulary Word Of The Day for themselves.

How do you pronounce "croissant", then?

NAYRT - kruh-sont or krah-sont, with the emphasis on the second syllable. The difference in pronunciation between the kruh and the krah version is pretty minor to the point I'm not entirely sure which one I say. But I imagine there could be places where the krah version is a harder pronunciation that stands out more from the kruh version.

That sounds like a not-very-clever joke that would get old really fast, even without the "words that have particular meaning to others" part. I'd assume that such a person is not terribly smart or mature, and doesn't have a lot going on for them if that's their idea of amusement.

Once or twice, okay haha very funny motherfucker*, but any more than that it gets old fast.

*I feel the same way about bad puns and "dad jokes": fine when used SPARINGLY.

In general, I don't really care. Nobody owns the word and we can all use it.

But if it's a weird situation where somehow mispronouncing a word is going to greatly offend someone... and frankly, I have a hard time imagining such a situation and an even harder time imagining why someone would knowingly do that... then it can depend. And it might not even have anything to do with the mispronouncing of the word but everything to do with the person who's just being insensitive on purpose.

Sometimes it's funny (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmh_6z9AWfc), but it can get offensive really fast if it's someone's name, if it's xenophobic (generally loan words), or it sounds similar enough to a slur. Though even if it's not offensive, it can get damn annoying sometimes (like Target being pronounced tahr-zhe).

"This person is weird but whatever. Each to their own."

I've given up "proving" to people I'm smart as well as come to accept everyone's got their own reasons to do what they do.
If that includes trying to get some sort of reaction by acting obtuse or rude in some manner, I won't do the dance for them.
*even if that isn't the intention and they mispronounce a word just because they like how they pronounce their words, then it's whatever*

I think that of all the annoying traits a person can have, that one is pretty close to “least annoying.”

oops.

I really love pronouncing champagne as 'cham-PAG-nay', lol. It's just a really pretentious looking word and I do not respect it.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-11 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
is that a pronunciation you made up or is it regional? I thought champagne in English was cham-pain °°

NAYRT

I speak French (fluently, but not I'm not a native). However, my friends and I pronounce champagne as sham-PAG-NUH for the lolz

I mean it depends on those 'up to and includings'? If someone is told 'hey, the way you said that is offensive' and instead of apologizing they double down, then that person is a jerk.

As a general thing, though, I think it can be funny. Much still depends on delivery, but a word mispronounced for humor, provided it isn't done offensively... sometimes I laugh! I'd MUCH rather a word mispronounced for humor than a word mispronounced on youtube because people correcting it in the comments feeds the algorithm...
