We're now at a point where if you spend a lot of time with anyone it's considered "romantic." A man has a male best friend with whom he does lots of things, and occasionally shows affection toward? Must be gay! A woman has a female best friend with whom she does lots of things, and occasionally shows affection toward? Must be gay!

Our culture revolves so tightly around the nuclear family that it cannot conceive of intimacy outside of it. I have spoken with people who think that deep friendship literally does not exist, because the only person with whom you could ever possibly share your "true self" is a romantic partner -- or, more toxically, your child. But a community is more than just you, your lover, and your offspring. And we need community, as a fundamentally social species.
