Aw, my mom is one of those "microwave baaaad don't stand in front of it when it's running" people. I thought this was mainly an old people thing.

From my (obviously) limited experiences, this misinformation is growing in popularity with younger generations too (across all generations).

I think it's easy to buy into this "microwaves are bad" misinformation because in general there are fears about overreliance on technology and a growing mistrust of tech, but it's easier to aim this anxiety/concern at microwaves because it can be fairly easy to avoid using it. And then one reassures themselves that they aren't being harmed by technology. Whilst ignoring that they are participating in this dystopia of tech by having a smart phone that they use for everything.
Also, demonizing microwaves is an easy way to participate in classism.

It's easier to misdirect anxieties/fears on things we can't control onto things that feel like we can to feel better about ourselves.
