Ah, I know the feeling OP. I'll have cravings for RPF, then get very conflicted over it--partly because the RPF I crave almost never exists in a fandom.

(Ironically, though, I'm usually less guilty over musician RPF... I mean, I can admit my love of Bruce Springsteen/Clarence Clemmons in public. There are plenty of others I'm not as forthcoming about.)

I am curious what musician/s you wish you had fic, but I understand if you're flat out not sharing that info.

Wow, entitled much, OP? These shows weren't created to be exclusively enjoyed by it's creator's nation; syndication in other nations is almost standard now for shows, and many books are published in a variety of languages. Also, are you seriously trying to tell people how to enjoy fandom? That does seem very ridiculous, trying to control how people enjoy themselves, like we should try to regulate fun. At least you realize that it would be ridiculous to even try.

Sometimes, it almost feels like Americans can't win: if we don't know about these shows/fandoms, it's because we are ignorant Amerihicks who only care about a show if it centers around us; if we do know about it, it's because we are trying to be hip and don't care about the show as much as the nation it is from. And as for being loud, well, some of us are, some of us aren't, just like everyone else. Americans lurk too.

One of the reasons the books bother me is because I went through a series of very emotionally abusive relationships and it took a great deal of effort on my part to come to terms with why I confused control and love. I was finally able to break the cycle, but it does bother me anytime bad relationships are presented positively because I don't like to think of anything reinforcing the idea that such relationships are a good thing to girls who might still be in the situation I escaped.

And just like the girl next door, she'll get into an abusive relationship, and wait for the good moments, believing that her man will calm down and treat her 'right' just like Edward did to Bella in the third book.

I want you, OP, to understand that someone I know, personally IRL, reads the book and adores it. Desires someone as 'romantic' as Edward.

She was in a seriously abusive relationship before this book came out. She swore she'd never have another like it. He treated her like shit.

Along comes this book, takes EXACTLY what she went through, and twisted it to put it in a romantic, rose colored light.

Suddenly, all she wants is an Edward.

Another abusive relationship. Personally, I abhore the book, and think that this book is like super models and barbies.

Kids are impressionable, haven't you ever heard of eating disorders? The definition of 'thin'. Models in magazines telling people how to lose their weight so boys will like them. Teeny bopper magazines, shoving thousands of images at their face, telling them to starve themselves, and other things, for a chance at love (because this is apparently the only way you'll get love).

So now, we've come into a new generation of kids. These ones now believe that they should bend over backwards for their man, ignore a chance at furthering their career's if it doesn't please their man. They should get married right away, and live a life of domestic bliss. And that everything their man does is golden.

Gee...do they get an allowence too?

Unfortunately though, about half of the Twilight fans I know are actually in or have been in abusive relationships. And while it may be possible to consider that its own separate problem, I personally believe it to be linked.

For example, I know a girl who was originally in a relationship with a guy who wasn't the best match for her, but treated her unbelievably well. Now after glorifying Twilight and Edward (she's actually the reason I know the books exist) she's with a guy who was trying to get her pregnant and trying to get her to try heroin. She's been with him for over a year and says she could see herself marrying him, and says things like "we don't know him like she does!"

Another girl I work with has been in several relationships, none of which I've ever known to be healthy. She also likes Twilight and the idea of Edward.. until I pointed out that Edward's behaviour was very similar to her ex who showed up at the job one day, cursed her out, then went outside the store to cut himself. She is no longer enamoured with the books.

Sorry, but Twilight is the ultimate glorification of battered woman syndrome. Yes, it is possible to be a fan and know the difference between a normal and an abusive relationship. But most people really aren't that smart.
