I can't help but agree. I only read TDL because I loved her fanfiction and writing but I don't quite think it lived up to the hype.

I read what that book is about. I completely forgot that she was the fanfic writer who wrote it that everybody was talking about.

The book is quite good, yes; I'd recommend it to any urban fantasy fan. Very well-written.

I agree with the secret writer in that her fanfiction was often very well written and funnier. Not always better, but definitely very good.

I thought it was just as good as Sarah's fanfic, if not better. Aftera all, with fanfic she was using already established characters in an already established world. That gave her time to focus on what she wanted to play with in the fic. In an original book, she has to develop from scratch all her own groundwork in world building and character development.

With TDL, Sarah has established her world and characters. Now in the 2nd and 3rd volumes, she can really begin to play with them. Perhaps volume 2 will be more to your tastes??

I completely agree. It wasn't that DL was bad; it just didn't move me to tears. I could go on about character building and pacing and blah blah blah, but long story short, Quality of Mercy was the final chapter of my childhood, and not even the HP 7 epilogue could have that place in my heart. So DL had pretty tough competition to begin with, and though it didn't live up to the hype, I still look forward to the next installment of the trilogy.

Nothing she ever writes will be as funny as Amazing Bouncing Rat, or as wonderful as Underwater Light.

But I did quite like the book, even if for most of it I was thinking "It's like a Winchester Boys adventure for kids..."

Uh, that's probably because your love of the HP characters adds a lot of illusory depth to the fanfics. That's how fanfic works. Give both the book and the fanfics to a friend who isn't into HP, and they'd probably rate the book as being equally good or, more likely, better.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but it's not as funny, heartbreaking, or clever as Quality of Mercy, Drop Dead Gorgeous, etc. are.

PS: I secretly continue to distribute her .pdf of fics to anyone who asks. I'm sorry, but at the same time, I'm really not.

I'd agree, but I'm hoping that her second, third, fourth, and bazillionth books will be better -- she needs practice writing original fiction, but hey, as much as I was crazy about Amazing Bouncing Rat, it seems terrible now.

I say this a s someone who cried during TDL because I was so moved by the last chapters. I agree. BUT I tell myself that TDL is not Harry Potter. And it's not the type that Sarah's fanfiction were. True she wrote some angsty ones (which btw are my least favourite by her) but it was pretty much always about Draco and the humour and Draco's humour. I love her Fanfiction wheter it's Draco/Hermione or Harry/Draco or whatever. TDL isn't comedy. There are comedy elements but it's also sad and there is action and issues.

And like people here said: These are new characters. I still don't get Mae and look forward to maybe get her in the second book from her POV. After thinking about that book I was fine with and happy that she lived up to the expectations. Kinda. I think a lot of people probably feel guilty that they didn't like TDL as much as her fanfiction and I did too and still do a bit. Because we (= the fans) all cheered her on and saw the process and were sure it would be brilliant. Who can ever live up to such expectations?

Anon because I wouldn't say it to Sarah's face either becuase she seems like such a lovley person.
PS: I was more disappointed by her recent HBP parody. It wasn't as funny as her other parodys.
