This. I don't know how many times people have tried to say 'IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU', but it always falls on deaf ears. It would be easier if defensive concern trolls would just chill out and allow the conversation to take place without them, if they find it so offensive.

From what I've seen, the confusion over "it's not about you" comes from the fact that one side is treating it like they're venting their frustration, while the other side is treating it as an open debate.

On the one hand, you have people who are trying to express their frustrations who keep getting interrupted by other people injecting their opinions or asking questions. On the other hand, you have people trying to debate an issue who keep getting told to be quiet and go away.

It's easy to see how both "sides" end up upset over the issue.

Open debate is not the same thing as getting flaily and defensive. Open debate is not about one particular person's preferences and how they do or do not fit into racist patterns in fandom-- that's what I mean when I say "I judge someone for being defensive." When they jump in to defend their own preferences when their preferences aren't on trial and, hell, half the time, no one knows who they are, I judge the fucking hell out of those people.

This.

The only time I've started getting defensive is when the post is using broad, sweeping terms, such as "all fans who like character ABC are racist because they should like character XYZ instead." (See the SPN fandom for prime examples; it's happened far more often than I'd like to admit.)

When the post isn't attacking a specific group of people, then yes - I agree with you.

-watches for the oncoming wank fest-

Because you know it's going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-17 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
People do it because it's so easy to roll your eyes and groan when people get their panties in a wad over some IMAGINED slight. I've seen way too much of people crying "SEXISM! RACISM!" over every little thing that it's hard to believe they aren't actively looking for it. But don't worry; we judge you back.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-17 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Getting defensive is entirely different from "rolling your eyes". If someone rolled their eyes and simply chose not to engage the conversation, I wouldn't judge them at all. It's the people who take a post that says "ABC pattern in XYZ fandom is displaying classic symptoms of racism and prejudice" and posts a tl;dr rant in the comments about how clearly the OP is the "racism police" and obviously the commenter is CLEARLY not racist because said pattern is NOT racist in the least, and they have all these PoC friends who back them up! When the post had nothing to do with that commenter in particular or that commenter's preferences except in a very general way.

It happens so ofte that I can't help but judge the commenter for it, because otherwise why the hell would you feel the need to defend your preferences to a bunch of random people on the internet?

(Anonymous) 2009-08-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know; why DO you feel that need?

(Anonymous) 2009-08-18 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because you're dumb.

What do you mean by the Elizabeth Bear reference? I used to see people all in love with her in the CM fandom (I never got it), but the reference still confuses me....

This is probably a good intro: http://wiki.feministsf.net/index.php?title=RaceFail_09

There's a link at the bottom of that page to Rydra_wong's rather more comprehensive collection of links.

Short version: Bear made a post about "how to write The Other." She gets called out for failing to do that in her own books. Lots of other published authors also fail it up.

What kills me are the people who think that because it's fantasy and it's not hurting anyone means it's awriiiight and you're just a butthurt dumbfuck/oversensitive/feminazi/troll, etc... I think there are obviously times in which people are seeing things that aren't there or are stretching things, but there are many legitimate cases in which concerns or requests for discussion are brought up and people with said concerns or desires for discussion basically get told to gtfo by defensive jackasses because they're clearly delusional.

Just because it's fantasy doesn't mean it can't be offensive or tasteless. And just because someone raises an eyebrow at your manga/Hetalia characters/animu/Twilight/rape simulator games, whatever, doesn't make them the Thought Police or mean that they judge the people who enjoy them. I read and watch stuff people would find probably find offensive or sexist. And those people would have a point. I'd be very likely to agree with them about certain things. It doesn't mean I can't enjoy it, even if I know it's a little questionable. What I -- like the OP -- hate are those people who think everyone who questions aspects of their precious series/game/book is the equivalent of a book-burner and want to ban everything from Tom Sawyer to Evangelion. More often than not, they are the ones jumping to wild conclusions and overanalyzing.

In a forum I frequent, there was a debate about rape simulator games and people wanting to ban them. The general consensus of most participants was that people in the thread who wanted to ban them or found them questionable and/or offensive were the Thought Police and before you know it, they'll be taking away your Lucky Star artbooks. I (like the few other girls in the thread) think those games are fucking disgusting, disrespectful trash; I can't fathom why anyone would want to play one to begin with. But I don't think they should be banned. That will do nothing to solve the real problems at hand, and banning only generates more interest. When we said that, it went right over their heads and we were man-hating Feminazis and stupid because stuff like that is perfectly acceptable and obviously doesn't influence anyone, ever. Which is bullshit; media does have some influence and impact on our lives, whether it's the 10:00 news, your favorite movie, something on the internet or a commercial for condoms. It may be small (for most people who are mentally stable, it is), but it's still there.

If you'd rather get defensive and rage all over the place than debate or discuss intelligently and rationally because someone brings up a negative aspect of what you like, you need to grow up. Fantasy isn't reality, but it can still be offensive/sexist/racist/etc..., and it's certainly worth talking about. Most of the time, people who find parts of something questionable aren't trying to start shit or get your crap banned; they're just trying to have a decent discussion. Usually, the ones who are oversensitive and butthurt are the ones who accuse the OP and and others who find something a little questionable of being oversensitive and butthurt.

tl;dr I feel you, OP.
