But this idea bothers me. It is like saying that just because there were white slave owners in the US who were nice to their slaves, that means the slavery was okay. No it does not. Gentle slavery is still slavery.

You would be so right if the House-elves didn't want to work for the Wizards. And we really have no evidence that House-elves were brainwashed into wanting to be slaves, except what Hermione says. And Hermione is not the end-all know-all about House-elves. Obviously.

To me, it seems common sense. Owning people are wrong. House elves aren't animals. They are thinking beings. Even if Dobby is the exception, he shows that elves don't have to be slaves. I think this says that brainwashing is at least the more likely scenario.

If the House-elves want to be owned, then more power to them, I say. If the House-elves want to be paid, then they should be allowed to be given clothes and sent out to find someone willing to pay for them. It's that simple. So, sure--let's get the House-elves better working conditions, but lets also allow the House-elves to have a say in how they are treated. The majority like to work for nothing, and take offense if you so much as suggest otherwise.

To you, maybe brainwashing is the likeliest scenario, but that doesn't mean it is the scenario. If there was evidence that this is the case, then you'd have a leg to stand on. As it is, this is one of those debates that have no clear winner, because all we have to go on is Hermione's words against it, and the fact that the House-elves of canon really love to work for nothing. Until we have an official source saying otherwise, I have no reason to think that House-elf slavery is wrong. XD

This is going to be one of those 'agree-to-disagree' things. :D

Except the house elves aren't human and don't think the same way humans do. They LIKE to serve humans. Why is it wrong for them to do something that they LIKE?
