Actually, while we're on a vaguely similar subject, I've a question. The unfair stereotype of Americans is that they're all loud and obnoxious. Like all stereotypes, it's irritating and lazy. However, I have noticed with any Americans I've met on my home soil - be they family, co workers, classmates, or tourists - they have always seemed to converse at a noticeably higher volume than I'm used to. I've often found myself itching for a remote control just to turn the volume down a notch or two.

Has anyone else noticed this, or has an a-typical control group skewed my data?

It's certainly not unfair to say that different cultures have different modes of accepted social behaviour. The distance you stand from a person you're speaking to, the volume at which you typically speak, your body language and facial expressions, are all subject to cultural conditioning. I do find that Americans tend to speak at a higher volume. It's not because they're willfully being obnoxious, it's just an ingrained social norm.

For what it's worth, when travelling abroad, I can usually pick the Australians, Germans and USians out of a line-up from a long way off based on their body language and speaking volume (even when I'm not near enough to hear what language they are speaking). It's not a value judgement, just an anthropological observation. But it is a generalisation that has some amount of merit to it.

Hm. This is interesting~. I've always tended to speak at a much lower volume than most of my fellow Americans (I'm always being told I'm quiet =_=), but I'm wondering now if it's partially because my German mother has always been very stern about my sister and I not speaking too loudly... 9_9
