My country is mono racial. I find recent Western shows with one of each race casts funny. It's never Latinas for some reason, but a black person, one Asian person and one White girl. Spin the wheel, get one colour each. The recent Dragon Age game is so bad because of diversity.

This. People forget that many countries are monoracial, and that while diversity is important it doesn’t mean that every single movie or tv show now MUST include a diverse cast.

For some shows/games/movies it’s just jarring.

(Or better yet, make it monoracial with only people from a minority group)

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency has all black cast and it makes sense.

Hell, even in the US, diversity depends entirely on where you live. I live in a very diverse city but I have been to places in the US where I was in a packed restaurant and there wasn't a single non-white person there.

My country isn't monoracial but it still looks jarring. Like a bag of M&Ms. Also our diversity of races is just different from American.

It's very odd how many people insist that never, anywhere, at any point in time, has a place been largely or totally populated by people of a single race.

On the other side of the coin, there are also people who think only the US and Europe are racially diverse, and completely flatten the diversity of, say, many South American countries. They imagine everyone there looks like an Indigenous person.

This always gets me like... It's only ever western shows that just HAVE to have diversity. And I just feel like a lot of people who demand this never watch anything other than western shows which is pretty telling in itself. And you never have them demanding, for example, Chinese or Middle Eastern shows or movies to have more diverse casts, only ever that traditional western media/myths/stories get forcibly diversified. And it's not like diversity in itself is bad but when it drifts into tokenism, it gets a bit awkward.

??? I think this is absolutely happening in TV shows and movies right now, which is great. And I've seen a lot of really good racebending fic and art, including a Black Superman and South Asian, Filipino and Mexican Legend of Zelda that aren't just "same characters only browner".

Yeah, I was gonna say, what media is OP watching that ISN'T diverse these days?

I am in podcasts and the amount of fandom artists just drawing characters brown/black and calling it a day is something else. Or fanfics writers just mentioning character having dark skin. I can't fault fandom for not doing more than canon but some people are being so self-important about it
