I can understand the former, it is a rare Scottish apple that you need to find at street markets or farm shops, but Egremont Russet is a fairly common late autumn supermarket apple. I'd encourage you to look for it, it is nice. If you've got room for a small tree, then a Bloody Ploughman on a dwarfing rootstock is the way to go. Just my tuppence.
