I'm watching 'Tell Them You Love Me'

Hoooooooly shit, this woman is so creepy. And the creepiest part is that even after being convicted and going to prison, she still doesn't get it! She doesn't think she did anything wrong, and doesn't seem to grasp why saying things like, "I'll sign my name in blood" on a voicemail might weird out the mother of the profoundly disabled man you're fucking.

It's sort of hammering home to me that some people simply do not possess the ability to critically assess their own actions, and to consider how those actions might impact or come across to others. She's going to go the rest of her life believing that she's a victim rather than victimizer.

That whole second paragraph has been such a hard lesson for me. I still struggle with fully getting it, but I have a family member like that and I am just constantly reminding myself that some people just really lack that ability. It seems like such a basic thing, but no.

It's a hard lesson for sure. There's always this hope that people can reflect and change, but some really can't.

I'm sorry you have family like that. That's rough to have to deal with.

SA

And my fucking gods, the way these people treat disability.

It's so clear that she and her mother have contempt who are of lesser intelligence than them, so the only way they can imagine that cognitively disabled people possess dignity is to pretend that they aren't actually cognitively disabled. "Acceptance?" C'mon! You know what acceptance would entail? Recognizing when someone truly lacks intellectual and cognitive ability, but viewing them as worthy and fully human, anyway. Saying, "oh no, they're actually just like me, and it's my job to guide them out of the prison of their bodies" is not acceptance; it's groping for a way to make disabled people more palatable to you.

Fuck, this is making me so mad. I need to go watch something light now.

Aw man that sounds very deoressing and frustrating watching. Go watch some Adventure Time or Kipo or something. Light and simple and fun.
