Yesss. I hate this. Or any negative "this sucks you probably shouldnt read it" bs notes. We all have those insecurities now and then but that is just not how you get people to read your stuff.

Ditto. You don't have to put a tag on it saying it's a work of genius, but just leave off saying how it sucks. Let the work speak for itself.

I feel that when people are THAT self-deprecating, it doesn't seem genuine.

It's cute... Pls r&r and disclamers, mostly the things of the past now.

I hate that, too. Not because it shows that the writer has no faith in their own story, but because it's so blatantly a bid for pity and "reassurance." They want everyone to tell them, "no, no, you're actually great! This is soooo good! Please please please don't feel bad about yourself!"

These people are manipulators. The last thing I want to do is give them what they want.

Or anything like "I suck at summaries, please read". Or tags with serious self-belittlement. A little self-deprecation is okay (Not Sure How Good This Is), but way too many people go way beyond that (This Sucks, I'm a Terrible Writer, Why Would Anyone Want to Read This?).

Yeah, it comes off very defensively needy.
I find a lot of the self-deprecating stuff really off-putting. Like, the author is signaling for people to reassure to them that they're good.

I tend to believe more in the "let the work speak for itself" approach.

So it can get annoying to see fics with the "this is my first fic sorry"/"I'm a bad writer, sorry for this bad fic" comments from the author get engagement. Because I do believe such comments can often prompt readers to engage more.

Call me a jealous writer, I am!!
I put in a lot of effort into my works and I don't go fishing for engagement/praise by telling people that I'm insecure about my works. Not saying I expect any engagement, but fucking he'll it can get really discouraging.

Most of the time I find it relatable and endearing, frankly. If it genuinely seems like they're doing it for reassurance then sure, that's kind of annoying, but most of the time I think people are doing it as way of self-soothing. They don't expect anyone else to reassure them.
