^This is the question OP should be asking themselves. Sometimes, these desires based on "what if" scenarios are super complicated and more about us and feeling unfulfilled in other areas of life. You shouldn't contact them if you think you're harboring even teeny tiny hopes of recapturing earlier affection, etc. Those expectations are too much.

But if you honestly, sincerely just want to touch base, say hello and see what they're up to, then it's fine. But don't get them involved if you're just trying to make yourself feel better about your current situation, that's not a good idea.

I'm OP. I should've stated that contacting them wouldn't be to lift myself out of a funk. Wasn't looking for a hookup either.
