The idea of someone reading fic before books is so bizarre to me.

First person used to be way more common in kids and YA and rarer in adult books. It seems to be the default in a lot of adult books now.

What time period was this? As far as I can tell, first person has been fairly popular for at least the last 150 years, well before “YA” was a thing.
