What non-horror media horrified you as a kid?

Backdraft for sure; I still have a pretty significant fire phobia and have next to no respect for arsonists.

I watched scenes from Rocky Horror Picture Show way too young. The scene where Tim Curry dresses as the husband/wife to trick them into having sex with him still freaks me out.

Shit, I thought that was hot. That always gave me tingles in the nether regions.

Unico in the Island of Magic. Kuruku/Kukuruku being an asshole but also his awful backstory.

Rewatched it as an adult and it wasn't a fraction as horrifying but still had its moments.

This may not have been considered horror because it's Star Trek but that woman with no face in the "Charlie X" ep. That didn't just give me nightmares. It gave me fucking PHOBIAS. Never watched that episode again and I was no little kid when I saw it.

I loved Watership Down but I was seriously haunted by it, lol. Also the tunnel in Willy Wonka has a scene of an actual chicken being decapitated on the walls. That was scary. Oh and Willy Wonka completely destroyed Gene Wilder for me: he was too creepy in that role.

Seconded on Watership Down. All the bunnies dying, and Bigwig being nearly strangled to death. :(

When I was little we used to go to Blockbuster every weekend and my sister and I were allowed to pick out one movie. Watership Down and The Dark Crystal were the two we picked when we couldn't find anything else to choose (why we kept choosing them at all I have no idea), and both of them scared the shit out of me as a kid. Amusingly, nowadays Watership Down is one of my favorite books to the point I bought a DVD of the movie to rewatch, and I loved the Netflix Dark Crystal miniseries and am still mad it got cancelled.

The original Star Trek episode 'The Man Trap' with the salt vampire. Holy fuck.

The scenes in Free Willy when the orca is distressed and slams against the glass panel the kids are banging against.

Also when they stop along the trail and are barred by a fallen tree. I asked dad to leave at that scene bc I was scared Willy/Keiko wasn't going to make it and I loved orcas at that point in my life (still do but that year in particular they were a special interest)

The Electric Grandmother

(Anonymous) 2024-07-01 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Now, it was based on Ray Bradbury's teleplay story I Sing the Body Electric for The Twilight Zone, but I don't think it was meant to be horror (it was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program and won a Peabody Award).

The whole idea of it was horrifying to me, but the storm really got to me.

The episode of Ghost Writer where there's a bubble gum monster who gets bigger when he gets warmer and they try to shrink him with a bucket if cold water but it was sitting in the sun all day and got warm OH NO

But maybe that show was supposed to be scary, otherwise I remember it as a mystery show.
