Nah, it's unfortunately really easy to make shitty Alien movies even without Joss Whedon's involvement.

Maybe he made it worse but it would probably have been bad regardless.

I'm not really much of a fan of his stuff anymore, but I don't think he gets all the blame for its terribleness since it was the studio wanted the Ripley clone storyline (after they decided not to do the Newt clone storyline), which was just a bad idea. But if it was his idea to make Ripley part Alien, yeah, he didn't make it better.
