I hate this argument so much - is there a time NOW where its been peaceful? Has there ever been a time in fandom that has been peaceful when it wasn't just small enough or too early at the start to have the problems that inevitably arise when a gathering of humans gather with that one asshole in tow? Sure there was purity culture then, but you'll never guess what's happening in certain fandoms right now over the inkling of anything problematic emerging.

Yeah, I think "certain fandoms" is key. I've never seen much of it in my fandoms. But it's popped up and I can believe it's a real problem in some fandoms.
