I really think YOU'RE missing the point.

"Bad things happened in the 1990s" is not a counterargument to "things have gotten worse since the 1990s". It just isn't. I'm not saying that no bad things happened between 1990 and 2000. I'm not saying that everyone was hopeful, or that everything was perfect.

But there were specific historical events that led many people to have hope during the 1990s - for instance, the early Blair years and the move away from Thatcherism and the "Cool Brittania" era of pop culture in the UK, the reunification of East and West Germany. You had the end of apartheid in South Africa. And there are specific events that have happened since then that have caused people to have less hope and to be more worried and pessimistic. The far right just is more powerful now, in the US and all throughout Europe and in India and in many other places.

If you want to make the argument that the hopeful things didn't matter in the 1990s and didn't make the world a better place, or were outweighed by the bad things - or you want to argue that the bad things since 1999 didn't actually make the world any worse - make the argument. But just pointing out that bad things happened during the 1990s doesn't really have anything to do with waht people are saying.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t bother reading past your first sentence because you really did miss the point. This isn’t about if things have gotten worse. This is about OP’s extremely wrong assertion that the 90s were a hopeful time that didn’t have genocide or fascism. And where we are now is the result of things that happened then.

They said "less"

There is less genocide. And arguably less fascism but that runs into semantics and the fascism of the 90s was tied up in other actions/motivations.

They also said more fun and hope, which is demonstrably wrong.
