nayrt but I think we're getting caught up in "My experience was not your experience" and/or "My experience invalidates your experience."

Personally, I would return to the late 90s era that OP was referring to, but that's only because things were going the best they ever had for me (oh young me). In a pre-9/11 world, things did feel hopeful. I also acknowledge that this may not have been the case for folks not in my shoes.

nayrt but I think we're getting caught up in "My experience was not your experience" is exactly it. American middle class kids may have been hopeful, and some other Americans. Some other westerners, too. Globally, that wasn’t the case. And the whole basis of the secret is that that time was free of specific things that are happening now. It wasn’t. Not even close. OP just wasn’t aware or has forgotten about what really happened. It doesn’t invalidate their personal experience but claiming their personal experience as universal truth invalidates the personal experience of literally billions of people.
