This is a really good point! I think it's a lot more interesting when writers actually do go deep on the specific historical context rather than just assuming bigotry is bigotry. If writers are going to use period-typical bigotry, I want to see some thought put into it.

There are a lot of historical settings where no one would blink an eye at two men having sex in itself, as long as the relationship complied with social norms, but huge consequences and scandal would result from those norms being broken. I do enjoy heavier fic sometimes so I would really enjoy seeing scenarios like that explored indepth, instead of another rehashing of "probably people were bigoted in the same exact ways back then as they are now, idk, angst." That said, nothing against fic that uses historical AU more as an aesthetic backdrop for a modern story, I do get the appeal there. After all, in AU fic we get to pick and choose what elements of a setting we want to use.
